The Ultimate 4 Day Outer Banks Itinerary for Families

With its windswept beaches, maritime forests, quaint villages and myriad options for land, water and air activities everywhere, the Outer Banks makes for a very fine yet speedy summer drive up the Atlantic coast. You definitely need at least three or four days to get a good lay of the land on these skinny slivers of sand.

Here’s our recommended itinerary to hit all of the OBX’s headline features, north to south and back again, mixing half-days at the beach with road touring and sightseeing. Hopefully, this customised four day itinerary will provide a helpful overview of the landscape and facilities available at each locale, so you’ll be able to better plan your once-in-a-lifetime OBX adventure.

Day 1: Immerse in History and Beach Vibes in Duck and Corolla

Start your trip in the northern town of Duck, with spectacular beaches and proximity to Corolla. A wonderful way to launch a day is by walking along the boardwalk across Currituck Sound. Then, head back to town for a feast from one of the many famous local restaurants (the North Carolina coast is right at the top of the seafood trail).

Then, drive back down towards Corolla and see some of the wild Colonial Spanish mustangs, horses that first came to the area with some of its early settlers, up close. Also visit the historic Corolla Park and see the 1920s Whalehead Club mansion, as well as climb to the top of the Currituck Lighthouse, an iconic local building that offers some of the best views of OBX.

Day 2: Take Flight and Admire Sunset Vistas in Kitty Hawk and Nags Head

Venture south to Kitty Hawk, birthplace of aviation, visiting the Wright Brothers Memorial detailing their pioneering 1903 flights. Its impressive granite monument overlooks the launch point. Away from the bustle, Jockey's Ridge State Park is a must-visit with its striking 80-foot sand dunes perfect for flying colorful kites.

Continue to the popular town of Nags Head. Soak in scenic views along its beaches and visit local establishments for a taste of Outer Banks culture. Time your sunset watch at Jennette’s Pier or Bodie Lighthouse. Walk by one to witness the sky transform brilliant hues of orange and pink as the sun sinks below shimmering waters.

Day 3: Island Hop along the National Seashore to Cape Hatteras

Now comes an exhilarating stretch of driving over 50 miles of relatively undeveloped National Seashore spanning islands, inlets and villages. First stop - the abandoned 19th century Oregon Inlet Life Saving Station before venturing towards recent shipwreck of the Ocean Pursuit fishing vessel lodged right onto the beach.

Next up is Hatteras Island, reached by the scenic free ferry. Hike coastal woodland trails and visit the museum dedicated to its seafaring past at the Graveyard of the Atlantic before standing under the iconic black-and-white candy-striped Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, the tallest in the Outer Banks. Watch the sunset from its base as its beam starts rotating, warning ships at sea.

Day 4: Step Back in Time Exploring Ocracoke Island

For your last day, take a short ride aboard the quaint passenger ferries plying between Hatteras and Ocracoke Island. This small vibrant village seems frozen in time with its slower pace and isolation. Once a pirate hideout, explore hammock-lined beaches, vibrant restaurants, coastal birds and wild ponies roaming beside unique cottage-style houses.

Visit the tiny Ocracoke Island Lighthouse still operating since 1823 and wade along the inlet beside Springer’s Point Nature Preserve, scattered with fascinating wreck artifacts. Or simply relax under the oak trees and relish this coastal paradise, bidding farewell as you board the afternoon ferry back to the mainland after your eventful OBX sojourn.

With endless stretches of protected beaches, rich history and adventures galore set against striking maritime landscapes, the Outer Banks promises memorable vacations for all interests and group sizes. Follow this flexible 4-day OBX itinerary overlaying the top island sights and experiences for an unforgettable vacation.
