The Southern Shores - OBX
The Beauty of the Southern Shores
With a beautiful beach, an occasional flat top home nestled among the dunes and extensive residential areas surrounded by a lush maritime forest, Southern Shores is unlike any other town on the Outer Banks. Seasonal rentals are almost exclusively limited to the oceanfront and one or two blocks to the west of NC12 with much of the remainder of the town is home to a year round population. There are two shopping centers and a small strip mall that comprise its commercial district, unlike most of the other towns where older homes have become art galleries, restaurants or retail stores.
Placing Southern Shores on the Map
The intersection of US 158 and NC 12 mark the southernmost point of Southern Shores. Duck is to the north and the town of Kitty Hawk is to the south. The Marketplace Shopping Center along US158 marks the western border.
Duck Woods Country Club
Founded in 1969, Duck Woods Country Club is the oldest golf course on the Outer Banks. The par 72 course is challenging but not overwhelming and has a reputation for being very well maintained.
Duck Woods also offers tennis courts, a pool and fitness facilities. Lunch and dinner are served in the clubhouse.
Shopping
There is no central shopping district in Southern Shores
The Marketplace is the shopping center about a mile past the end of the Wright Memorial Bridge. Many visitors to the Outer Banks know of the Marketplace as home to a Food Lion grocery store.A Starbucks, bagel shop, and other businesses are part of the shopping center.
Southern Shores Crossing, at the intersection is at the NC12 and US158. It features an eclectic blend of shops and restaurants.
There is a small strip center between Southern Shores Crossing and the Marketplace. The shops are on a one way street that connects NC12 with US158 west. Follow your nose to the Crumbl Cookie Store.
The Beach
Southern Shores has wonderful beaches—wide and sandy with a very well developed dune line. However, access to the beach is by permit only. Beach permits are available to homeowners, renters and guests. The beach is available for public use, though, so someone who walks north from Kitty Hawk, is allowed to be on the beach.
