If you're one of the growing numbers of electric vehicle owners, you might wonder if it's practical to take your Tesla or Volt down to the Outer Banks for a beach vacation. Worry not, as the OBX is actually extremely EV-friendly these days.
There are way more options for charging up than you will expect, both at public stations and right at some of the beach hotels. One of the best perks is finding that a bunch of the hotels themselves are getting EV chargers installed right in their parking lot. How convenient is that? You can just charge overnight while you sleep after a day on the beach.
Let us give you the run-down on all the EV charging spots in the Outer Banks which is clearly making an effort to embrace electric vehicle tourism.
For starters, pretty much every town has at least one or two public charging stations centrally located. You can charge up your EV while running errands, grabbing a bite, or just exploring the area shops and attractions. Up in Corolla, the Twiddy & Company realty office has a Level 2 charge point with a couple of plugs. A little further South in Duck, the Waterfront Shops have Tesla destination chargers available for guests.
There are also handy public charge points at the Southern Shores Town Hall, the Holiday Inn Express in Kitty Hawk, and the Harris Teeter grocery store in Kill Devil Hills which has a Tesla Supercharger. From what we could tell, Heart of Manteo is really leading the charge as they have ton of options to charge your EV.
Other hotels that are a delight for EV drivers include Scarborough Inn and OBX Motor Lodge that have EV chargers right there in the garage or driveway. A few other homes that look incredible for EV charging points are oceanfront stunners like Blue Heron Motel.
Overall, you will be pleasantly surprised by how many charging choices are available all across the Outer Banks now during your long weekend down there. Between the public stations and vacation homes with chargers, it feels almost as convenient as driving a gas-powered car.
On your next trip if you are planning to take your EV along, you can just wake up with a fully-charged vehicle sitting outside your room or driveway the next morning and never have to worry about driving around looking for a hard-to-find gas station or wasting vacation time at a pump.
So for the electric vehicle enthusiasts out there, we can't recommend the OBX enough for your next beach getaway. The charging infrastructure is expanding rapidly and it's an awesomely eco-friendly destination. Just be sure to map out your charging stops and potentially book one of those swanky houses or hotels with its own EV hook-up. Your Tesla will be ready to hit the road or beach with a full battery every single day.
